Effect of Client-Centered Counselling Therapy in Reducing Drug Addiction among Youths in Azare Metropolis

Abstract:
Drug addiction among youths is a significant public health concern in many communities, including Azare Metropolis. This study aims to investigate the effect of client-centered counseling therapy on reducing drug addiction among youths in Azare Metropolis.

The research employed a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. Quantitative data was collected using structured questionnaires, while qualitative data was obtained through in-depth interviews and focus group discussions. The study sample consisted of 200 youths aged 18 to 25 years who were actively engaged in drug addiction treatment at selected rehabilitation centers in Azare Metropolis.

The intervention involved implementing client-centered counseling therapy, which is a person-centered approach that emphasizes empathy, unconditional positive regard, and congruence between the therapist and the client. The therapy sessions were conducted by trained counselors over a period of six months.

The findings of the study revealed that client-centered counseling therapy had a significant impact on reducing drug addiction among youths in Azare Metropolis. Quantitative analysis showed a statistically significant decrease in self-reported drug use and addiction-related behavior among the participants after the intervention. Qualitative data provided insights into the participants' experiences, highlighting the therapeutic alliance, empathic understanding, and non-judgmental attitude of the counselors as crucial factors in their recovery process.

These results suggest that client-centered counseling therapy can be an effective approach in addressing drug addiction among youths in Azare Metropolis. The study contributes to the existing literature by providing empirical evidence on the positive effects of this therapeutic approach in a specific cultural context.

Based on the findings, it is recommended that healthcare providers, policymakers, and stakeholders in Azare Metropolis consider integrating client-centered counseling therapy into existing drug addiction treatment programs for youths. Further research is warranted to explore the long-term effects of this therapeutic approach and its potential applicability in diverse settings.
