Abstract:
This abstract examines the critical issue of the lack of autonomy as a significant factor contributing to the failure of local government administration in Nigeria. Local government administration plays a crucial role in grassroots development, service delivery, and effective governance. However, the autonomy of local governments in Nigeria has been a longstanding concern, impeding their ability to fulfill their mandate and address the needs of the local population.

This study utilizes a qualitative research approach, drawing on existing literature, reports, and expert opinions to analyze the extent of autonomy enjoyed by local governments in Nigeria. The findings reveal that the current system of local government administration in Nigeria suffers from a lack of autonomy in various aspects, including financial, political, and administrative spheres.

Financially, local governments heavily depend on state governments for funding, which often leads to delays, inadequate allocations, and misappropriation of funds. This undermines local governments’ ability to carry out developmental projects, deliver basic services, and respond to the specific needs of their communities effectively.

Politically, local governments face challenges as they are often subjected to undue influence and interference from state governments. This hampers their decision-making authority, limits their ability to implement policies, and compromises their independence. Consequently, local government officials may become more accountable to state governments than to their local constituents.

Administratively, local governments lack the necessary power and capacity to recruit, train, and retain qualified personnel, resulting in a deficiency of skilled staff. Additionally, the absence of an independent local government service commission further exacerbates the problem, leading to instability and inefficiency in local government administration.

The lack of autonomy in local government administration in Nigeria has far-reaching consequences, including poor service delivery, corruption, inadequate infrastructure development, and limited citizen participation in decision-making processes. Addressing this issue requires comprehensive reforms aimed at enhancing the autonomy of local governments, such as granting them fiscal independence, ensuring political non-interference, and establishing robust administrative systems.

In conclusion, this abstract highlights the critical role of autonomy in local government administration and its direct influence on the failure of local government systems in Nigeria. It underscores the urgent need for reforms to strengthen the autonomy of local governments, empowering them to effectively carry out their responsibilities, promote grassroots development, and foster good governance at the local level.
