AN EVALUATION OF THE POSTMODERN ARCHITECTURE’S EFFECTS ON MODERN RESIDENTIAL STRUCTURES IN NORTHERN NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

With the goals of simplicity, functionality, and no adornment or reference to the previous historic or traditional setting in favor of mass manufacturing, modern architecture began as an “international style” at the museum of modern art in America. Aiming for traditionalism, revivalism, historicism, and contextualism, which modernist architects were not focused on, historians and critics exacerbated the issues as the mission went on. Postmodern architecture was conceptualized as a new style with a strong emphasis on references to traditional buildings, historic heritages, and new ambiguous types of form and space as a reaction against “Architectural modernism” over time, with the progressing processes and the influences of the oppositionist. Within a short period of time, postmodern architecture completely overtook traditional architecture in both Europe and America It had connections to many locations, including Africa and Nigeria. Northern Nigeria underwent modifications in the current designs after its expansion and linkages in the 1980s due to the influence of the new style, particularly in residential buildings. These modern residential structures are made up of a variety of architectural and design philosophies from many historical periods, which have been combined with local ideas to create postmodern designs with a beautiful aesthetic. This study sought to explore the effects and significance of postmodern architecture in the northern area based on these current contemporary settings. The study also focused on single-family postmodern residences in the Northeast and Northwest, with an emphasis on architecture, which includes plan scheme (spatial organization), façade, and interior design Postmodern architecture examines architectural treatments, built forms, and physical built aspects to ascertain the robust consequences of those built features. In order to investigate the effects of certain arranged features/elements in postmodern residential buildings, a literature review and field study (personal observation) will be used, in accordance with the objectives and the scopes of the study. 52 numbers of well-chosen cases and 26-floor layouts were employed to successfully accomplish these goals. According to the study’s findings, the northern urban context is not constrained by postmodern architecture. Their surrounding built features have had a favorable impact on the aesthetics and character of the area. Due to the requirement for privacy in contemporary residential structures in the northern region to a diverse system of plan forms.
