EXAMINING QUEUEING BEHAVIOR OF PASSENGERS AT NNAMDI AZIKIWE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, ABUJA

 Abstract:

The aviation sector plays a pivotal role in driving economic development in most nations, facilitating secure and punctual travel, stimulating business activities, and creating employment opportunities. However, the Nigerian air transport system grapples with several challenges, notably long queues and passenger delays, often leading to inconveniences and a preference for alternative road transportation. This study presents a queuing model as a partial remedy to this predicament, with a focus on Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA) in Abuja, Nigeria.

Our investigation centered on four prominent airlines: Arik Airline Limited, British Airways, Ethiopian Airline, and Aero Contractors. We employed the Birth and Death Rate (BDR) and Multi-Server (MS) Models, widely recognized techniques for addressing such issues, to model and analyze the waiting dynamics. Empirical data collected from these airlines were used to validate the outcomes of the models.

Our findings revealed that to adequately meet the existing passenger demand at NAIA, Abuja, each airline should maintain a minimum fleet size of five aircraft for daily operations. This would ensure they can accommodate the average monthly demand of 21,863 passengers on their current routes. We employed service factors with utilization levels of 0.4, 0.6, and 0.9 at a 5% significance level for both the BDR and MS models. Implementing these models resulted in a significantly enhanced system reliability and efficiency, minimizing service delays across all sectors analyzed in this study.

We recommend extending the application of the BDR and MS models to other airports across Nigeria to mitigate passenger delays. Furthermore, regulatory authorities should closely monitor passenger patronage data at Nigerian airports to ensure seamless operations and enhance overall passenger experiences.
