VIBRIO SPECIES ANALYSIS IN MTU RIVER AND UNILAG LAGOON

Abstract:

The initial step in comprehending the nature of a disease in any environment involves the isolation and identification of the causative agent. This study aimed to investigate the isolation, identification, and molecular characterization of Vibrio species in water samples collected from Mountain Top University in Ogun state and the University of Lagos lagoon in Lagos, Nigeria. Vibrio species are frequently encountered bacteria in aquatic environments, and certain strains are responsible for causing acute diarrhea in humans when consuming raw seafood or contaminated seafood products.

Isolates from the water samples were subjected to thorough characterization and identification through a battery of biochemical tests. The results of these tests unequivocally confirmed that the isolated bacteria belonged to the Vibrio species. Subsequently, molecular-based detection techniques, involving PCR amplification and analysis of the 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequence, were employed to further characterize the Vibrio species.

Of the 20 isolates obtained from the water samples collected from both Mountain Top University River and the University of Lagos lagoon, four isolates were definitively identified as Vibrio spp. These findings indicated that Vibrio species were indeed present in the water bodies of Mountain Top University and the University of Lagos, albeit at significantly low concentrations. This observation suggests the existence of a potential reservoir of Vibrio species in these university water bodies, highlighting the importance of water quality monitoring. Furthermore, the presence of Vibrio species raises concerns regarding the safety of consuming fish or water from these sources, as it may pose a risk of waterborne infections.
