Effect of Solution-Focused-Brief Counselling Technique on Procrastination Behaviour Among Primary School Teachers in Bauchi Metropolis
Abstract:
Background: Procrastination is a prevalent behavioral issue that can significantly impact individuals' productivity and well-being, including primary school teachers. This study aims to investigate the effect of the Solution-Focused-Brief Counselling (SFBC) technique on procrastination behavior among primary school teachers in Bauchi Metropolis.
Methods: A quasi-experimental research design with a pretest-posttest control group was employed. The sample consisted of primary school teachers selected through stratified random sampling, with 60 participants assigned to the experimental group and 60 participants to the control group. The experimental group received six sessions of SFBC, while the control group did not receive any intervention. The Procrastination Assessment Scale for Students (PASS) was used to measure procrastination behavior before and after the intervention.
Results: The findings revealed a significant reduction in procrastination behavior among primary school teachers who received SFBC compared to the control group. The experimental group demonstrated a statistically significant decrease in overall procrastination scores (p < 0.05). Furthermore, there were significant reductions in specific procrastination dimensions, such as task delay, decisional procrastination, and avoidance of challenging tasks (p < 0.05).
Conclusion: The results suggest that SFBC can be an effective intervention for reducing procrastination behavior among primary school teachers in Bauchi Metropolis. The intervention helped teachers develop goal-oriented thinking, problem-solving skills, and enhanced self-efficacy, which contributed to a decrease in procrastination tendencies. The findings of this study have implications for educational institutions and counseling professionals in addressing procrastination behavior among teachers, thereby improving their productivity and job satisfaction.
