Abstract:

Reading fluency, the ability to read text quickly, accurately, and with proper expression, is a critical component of reading proficiency. However, many students struggle to develop sufficient reading fluency, which can impede their overall reading comprehension and academic performance. This paper explores the use of repeated reading techniques as an effective strategy for promoting reading fluency in elementary and secondary students.

Repeated reading involves having students read the same text multiple times, either silently or aloud, with the goal of improving reading rate, accuracy, and prosody. Research has consistently demonstrated the benefits of repeated reading, showing that it can lead to significant gains in reading fluency as well as broader improvements in reading comprehension. The paper discusses the theoretical underpinnings of repeated reading, reviews empirical studies documenting its efficacy, and provides guidance on implementing these techniques in the classroom.
