Abstract
The ability to write effectively is a crucial skill for English as a Second Language (ESL) or English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners. One approach to improving writing skills is through explicit grammar instruction, where learners are provided with direct explanations and practice of grammatical structures. This study investigates the impact of explicit grammar instruction on the writing skills of ESL/EFL learners.
A quasi-experimental research design was employed, with one group receiving explicit grammar instruction and the control group receiving traditional writing instruction without a focus on grammar. Participants’ writing samples were collected before and after the instructional period and were assessed by trained raters using a validated writing rubric.
The results indicate that the group receiving explicit grammar instruction demonstrated statistically significant improvements in overall writing quality, grammatical accuracy, and complexity compared to the control group. Further analysis revealed that the greatest gains were seen in the areas of sentence structure, verb usage, and grammatical agreement.
These findings suggest that incorporating explicit grammar instruction into ESL/EFL writing curricula can lead to tangible improvements in learners’ writing abilities. The study provides empirical support for the value of integrating grammar teaching with writing practice to enhance the linguistic competence of language learners. Implications for teaching and future research are discussed.
