THE INFLUENCE OF READING HABITS ON WRITING SKILLS AMONG HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS.
Abstract
This study examines the relationship between reading habits and writing skills among high school students. Previous research has suggested that frequent reading can positively impact various aspects of writing, such as vocabulary, grammar, and overall writing quality. However, the specific nature of this relationship in the high school context is not well understood.
The present study surveyed 300 high school students to assess their reading habits, including the frequency, duration, and types of material read. Students also completed a standardized writing assessment to evaluate their writing skills across key dimensions like organization, development, and mechanics.
The results indicate a significant positive correlation between students’ reading habits and their writing skills. Students who reported reading more frequently, for longer durations, and across a wider range of genres demonstrated notably stronger writing performance compared to their peers with less developed reading habits. Further analysis revealed that certain reading behaviors, such as reading for pleasure and exposure to diverse text types, were particularly predictive of enhanced writing abilities.
These findings suggest that high schools should prioritize cultivating robust reading habits among students, as this may have important implications for improving their overall writing proficiency. Recommendations for implementing reading-focused instructional strategies and extracurricular activities are discussed. Additional research is needed to explore the causal mechanisms underlying the reading-writing relationship in secondary education.
