ABSTRACT

This project aims at designing and constructing a book metallic shelf hose capability will be to contain different standard sizes of books at minimum paces.

What is taken into consideration in this project are the cost of its production, processes, and maintenance.

Other considerable factors are the functional aspect of the plant/equipment and its durability and reliability. Portability, stability, and the physical appearance of the entire equipment.

CHAPTER ONE

1.0       INTRODUCTION

A bookshelf is a device with partitions used for books and files in offices, libraries, and homes.

 

A bookshelf can be wooden, metal, or glass. They could also be designed in such a way that they could be dismountable or undismountable. In our project, we decided to design and construct an undismountable metallic bookshelf.

 

Among the bookshelves, the undismountable metallic bookshelf has the longest life span because of its rigidity, quality of material, and ability to withstand heavy loads.

 

In other words, the constant loosening and coupling of the parts lead to the weakness of the bolt and nut, thus subjecting the shelf to vibration.

 

Our project the undismountable bookshelf was constructed with a variety of materials. The type of materials involved is mild steel sheet metal, metals nets (wire gauze), etc. in this the mild steel sheets softensofted to cover the partitions and outside bodies of the where used in the corruption of the two doors.

 

The essence of creating a steel framework is for it to withstand the stress that will be developed due to the weight of the material and loads on each partition. In construction, the frame was first erected before covering it with a mild steel sheet. The mass and volume of the book contained by each partition were considered before they were erected, so certain experiments were carried out which will be discussed in detail in this report.

 

1.1       DESCRIPTION OF THE METAL BOOKSHELF

The metal bookshelf as shown in fig.1.0 is made up of the following parts and components.

i.          The framework

ii.         The side

iii.        The back

iv.        The doors

v.         The top or plane

vi.        The stand wheels

vii.       The partitions

viii.      The drawer

viii.     The top projection

 

THE FRAME

The frame is shown in fig. 1.1 is the skeleton of the whole shelf, it is made of folded mild steel of bent edge 37.5mm (1 ½) and a thickness of 1mm. The frame was first created together using welding before the sheet was covered at the back half on each coach partition, side, top, and partition.

The frame was designed to withstand the stress that will be developed on it due to the weight of sheet metals and the load on each partition.

THE SIDE

The side as shown in Fig. 1.2 is made up of mild steel 1.0mm thick with a height of 168cm and length of 85cm.  It was welded to the frame (at an angle of 900)

The top project and the standing wheel give the total height of the (bookshelf) side.

THE BACK

The back as shown in fig 1.3 is made of a mild steel sheet of thickness 1.0mm, 168cm by height, and 85cm in length and was also welded diagonally to the frame(at an angle of 90) halfway on each loach partition to keep away visible book  destructive agent

THE DOOR

The metal bookshelf has two doors and two loaches the left and right doors which are covered with a metal net or wire gauze respectively shown in fig. 1.4, the doors, were constructed with folded mild steel of bent edge 37 mm and covered with wire gauze to allow the user to view inside the shelf, to know if the particular book or file he/she is searching for is in that particular bookshelf.

THE TOP OR PLANE ON DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF A METALLIC BOOKSHELF

The top as shown in fig. 1.5 is made of a mild steel sheet of thickness 1.0mm and 168 cm length by 85 cm width and it is also welded diagonally to the frame (I e at angle 90).

THE STAND WHEELS

The stands were made from a rectangle folded mile steel of bent edge and fixed wheels for easy change of position. The two back stands were made from a square pipe while the two front stands were made from rectangular pipe.

This stand was exerted from the framework to enable stronger gripe, avoid bending, breaking, and also fixed to wheels. The stand and wheels add to the height of the metal bookshelf to a total of mm in height and there are four stands under the bookshelf attached to four wheels.

 

THE PARTITIONS:

The partitions were designed to be able to contain a large number of books. They are measured 168 cm in height,85 cm in length, and 33cm in breadth. The material used for the partitions was a mild steel plate of 1.2mm thick was welded to the framework of the partitions

The volume of the partition

= L X b x h

20cm x 33cm x20cm

= 13200cm.

Area of partition

= 2(Lb+bh+Lh)

= 2(20 x 33 + 33 x20 +20×20)

=2 (660 +660+400)

= 2 (1720) = 3440cm

= 34+4m2

 

1.2       PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT

The purpose of this project is to design and construct a metallic bookshelf capable of concerning the different standard sizes of books. The design should be able to compete favorably with other accepted standards.

 

1.3       AIMS OF THE PROJECT

This project is aimed at providing a modification to a metallic bookshelf for office and home use as well as:

(i)         To provide live equipment in the office that could be used for exhibition by the staff.

(ii)        Improving the printing processes and quality of products and reducing the cost of production.
