CAUSES AND EFFECTS OF MORAL DECADENCE IN IGBOLAND: SOCIO- POLITICAL, ECONOMIC AND RELIGIOUS PERSPECTIVES

ABSTRACT

This work has its thrust on the causes and effects of Moral Decadence in Igboland: Socio-Political, Economic and Religious Perspectives. The present disturbing state of the Igbo moral world and the tragedy as well as the apparent degradation of the moral values is indices of the sordid state of the adulterated Igbo moral world. The bane of the Igbo society today is the relegation of moral issues. This work is a qualitative research and the research design adopted was descriptive and analytical. Data from primary and secondary sources were used. The data from the primary sources were mainly from oral interviews and the secondary sources were from government documents and gazettes, press releases, magazines, newspapers, books, journal articles, unpublished theses and papers. The method of analysis was both critical and systematic. Critical, systematic narrative and analytical method of interpretation of data were used to present the work. The researcher discovered that western civilization came into Igboland and triggered off cultural religious change, which brought about new value orientation to the social structure of the Igbo world view. This has led to the breed of unstable social structures, strange and inconsistent political ideologies, economic dilemma, religious syncretism, materialism and moral decadence. The findings show that, the elements confronting Igbo society in the present dispensation are bad leadership, corruption, human trafficking, indecent fashion, prostitution, high rate of materialism, insecurity, cultism, kidnapping, drug abuse and injustice in Judicial system. The implication of the findings is that the socio- political, moral, economic and religious outlook of the entire Igbo world indicates that the Igbo are rapidly undergoing serious moral degeneration.

This study has descriptively and analytically articulated the trend of this moral decadence in Igboland and has scholarly presented its findings, contributions for knowledge, recommendations and suggestions for further research.
