IMPEDIMENTS IN THE PRACTICE OF THEATRE SCENOGRAPHY IN THE UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA, NSUKKA: A DECADE SURVEY (2008-2018).
ABSTRACT
This study, Impediments in the Practice of Theatre Scenography in the University of Nigeria, Nsukka : A Decade Survey (2008-2018) focuses on the challenges bedeviling technical theatre practice in Nigeria, especially the theatres in our Educational Institutions. The Arts Theatre of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka is selected as case study. As a result, the study adopts historical method and personal interview as its methodologies. The study hinges on systems theory as its theoretical framework with the aim of understanding the challenges encountered in theatrical performances and the factors that influence them. To accomplish this, information was sought from experienced theatre scenographers, theatre scholars. The findings in the study show that the practice of theatre scenography at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka Arts Theatre is confronted with enormous challenges such as lack of trained personnel, inadequate modern equipment and paucity of funding. The study summarizes by recommending along with other measures, urgent need for funding, and an immediate attention to architectural challenges placed by the Arts Theatre
