INVESTIGATING THE ROLE OF INFILL STRUCTURES ON THE SHAPE MEMORY EFFECT OF SHAPE MEMORY POLYMERS IN ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING

ABSTRACT

Because of its distinctive features, additive manufacturing (AM) enables designers and engineers to include functionalities in printed items. This implies that a product or component that served a particular function could be incorporated into another element. Shape Memory Polymer is a technique for embedding functionalities in AM (SMP). The substance that responds to a stimulus by changing shape is known as SMP. The special characteristics of smart materials enable the transformation of 3D-printed items by predetermined programmed sequences. The metamaterial can also be used as a means of incorporating the function into 3D-printed products (also called smart structures). Metamaterial embeds function through cleverly planned internal movement and derive special qualities from cleverly constructed structures. This thesis examines how infill structures affect the SMPs’ Shape Memory Effect (SME). The effect on SMEs was investigated by contrasting various infill structures (such as internal void and infill patterns). Earlier research has successfully modified printing parameters like infill density or filling angles to program SMEs. However, with the use of material extrusion 3D printing technology, only a few research have been conducted, and links between SME and infill structure have not yet been thoroughly addressed. As a result, the main focus of this research will be on how infill patterns or specific fragments of infill buildings alter SMEs. To investigate the effects of different infill structures on SMEs, the external object geometry is kept constant. It has been demonstrated that SMEs can be managed without the need to modify the materials or external geometrical characteristics. This enables us to integrate different SMEs into items that are all created from the same substance.
