CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE RISK FACTORS AMONG ADULTS IN DAKACE VILLAGE ZARI

Abstract

Introduction. Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are increasingly becoming the major causes of morbidity and mortality in several developing countries including Nigeria. The developing countries contribute a greater share of the global burden of CVD than the developed countries and this has public health implications.
Aim. The study aimed at determining the prevalence of various cardiovascular disease risk factors among adult population in Dakace village near Zaria.
Methodology. Using a cross-sectional descriptive study design a total of 424 eligible respondents were sampled from three wards by cluster sampling method. Using closed-ended, structured and interviewer-administered questionnaire information was obtained from these participants. From the sample respondents, using a simple random sampling 199 respondents were sub-sampled and their fasting serum levels of blood sugar, cholesterol, triglyceride and lipoproteins were measured.
Results. Results of the study revealed that 35.6% of the respondents had elevated blood pressure, being the commonest identified CVD risk factor. Prevalence of other CVD risk factors ranged from 0.5% to 23.1%;only about 25% of respondents were free of modifiable CVD risk factors. Risk factors found to be significantly associated with elevated blood pressure included age, family history of hypertension and obesity. However, results of multiple regression analysis showed that only obesity significantly contributed to the levels of both systolic and diastolic blood pressures while age contributed only to systolic blood pressure.
Conclusion. It was concluded that CVD risk factors were prevalent among respondents and imposed a heavy disease burden. Based on the findings, it was recommended that a comprehensive awareness campaign and screening programme be embarked upon in the community.
