REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH SERVICE EXPECTATIONS AND EXPERIENCES; COMPARATIVE STUDY AMONG URBAN AND RURAL IN-SCHOOL ADOLESCENTS IN OYO-STATE, NIGERIA
Abstract
Introduction: The huge population of the world’s adolescents coupled with their numerous needs makes Adolescent Reproductive Health Service issue quite topical. This study, therefore aimed to determine the expectations and experiences of adolescents of Adolescent Reproductive Health Services.
Method: This was a descriptive cross sectional study that was carried out among in school adolescents in Oyo State, Nigeria, between March and June 2016. Two Hundred and Fifty two respondents each were selected for the rural and urban groups from four Local Government Areas using multi-stage sampling technique. Data were collected using a pre- tested semi-structured questionnaire and Focus Group Discussion (FGD) guide; data analysis was done using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 22 and detailed content analysis method respectively. Frequencies and Chi-square values were generated and significance level set at 0.05.
Results: A total of 225 rural and 225 urban respondents participated in this study with a mean age of 14.3+1.93 and 13.9+2.03 for rural and urban respondents respectively. Few of the respondents (59, 13.1%) were aware of the existence of adolescent reproductive health service and just 47 (10.4%) of respondents had ever utilized ARHS. Two hundred and seventeen (48.2%) consented to the fact that they needed an ARHS centers with a higher proportion from the rural communities. The major reason why almost half 207 (49.6%) of the adolescents had never been to a facility rendering ARHS before was that they didn’t know where to go. Thirty two (88.9%) of respondents who had utilized ARHS before considered the service satisfactory. Respondents considered confidential service 311 (69.1%), friendly staff 275 (61.1%) and low cost service 245 (54.4%) as the most important characteristics of an ARHS.
Conclusion: Awareness of Adolescent Reproductive Health services was lower among respondents, leading to a poor utilization of such service. The majority of the respondents agreed to the fact that they needed ARHS and they expect a place where their confidentiality will be held in high esteem and the availability of free or subsidized services as well as the presence of friendly staff.
