ANAEMIA IN PREGNANCY. A STUDY OF THE RISK FACTORS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF BENIN TEACHING HOSPITAL

Abstract

A prospective case control study was undertaken to determine the factors
that predispose pregnant women to Anaemia at the University of Benin
Teaching Hospital, Benin-City.
Two hundred and eighty eight pregnant women at their booking visit who
had anaemia were compared with an equal number of pregnant women at
the same gestational ages without anaemia. Other pieces of Information
obtained included socio-demographic characteristics, medical and
obstetric histories and the incidence of malaria parasitaemia.
Upon analysis, only thirteen potential risk factors were identified, after
adjustment by multiple logistic regression, only five factors were found to
be significantly associated with anaemia in pregnancy. These were low
socioeconomic status, primigravidity, birth interval of less than 2 years,
multiple pregnancy and malaria parasitaemia
