PROSTATE GLAND NEOPLASM IN ZARIA: A TEN YEAR HISTOPATHOLOGICAL REVIEW (1991 – 2000)

Abstract

This is a ten-years retrospective histopathological review of Prostate gland neoplasm seen in the Pathology Department of Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital Zaria between January 1991 and December 2000. The aim of this study is to analyse the histopathological pattern of prostate gland neoplasm in Zaria. One hundred and fifty-one cases of prostate cancer were studied and these formed 4.4% of malignancies and 10.1% of all male malignancies seen during the period of study. The bulk of prostatic specimen received in the Department was Trucut biopsy (51.6%), this was followed by prostatectomy (43%) and open biopsy (5.4%). Incidental prostate cancer constituted 35.1% of all prostate cancer and 10.6% of nodular hyperplasia cases seen during the study period. The mean age of the patients under review was 67 years, two cases of relatively young patients of ages 30 and 32 years respectively were observed. High grade prostate intraepithelial neoplasia (PIN) was found to coexist with prostate cancer in 47% of cases; it was observed that the incidence of PIN increases with the age of the patients. Lymphocytic infiltrations of mild (40.4%) to moderate (43.7%) severity respectively were found in the tumour analysed. The most common histopathological type of prostate cancer in Zaria was adenocarcinoma, rare epithelial and non-epithelial tumours were not observed.
