THE ESSENTIAL FACTORS FOR IMPROVING QUALITY TEACHING AND ADULT LEARNING FOR EXCELLENCE IN ADULT EDUCATION PROGRAMMES IN NIGERIA

Abstract

Adult education is a body of organized educational programmes offered for youth, men and women who had no opportunity of formal schooling at early years of their lives. Adult education which is usually referred to as ‘second chance’ education encompasses literacy, vocational, technical and other non-formal educational programmes offered to cater for various individual needs and dispositions for them to acquire requisite information, ideas, knowledge and skills which will enable them solve their problems in the society. Notwithstanding the importance of adult education towards human and national development, yet, this programme suffers a lot of neglect from all corners. This negligence, owing to some factors, has kept many adult education programmes in a devastating and distressful state; making it impossible for improving quality teaching and adult learning for excellence in these programmes. Upon this premise, this paper discussed the essential factors necessary for improving quality teaching and adult learning for excellence in adult education programmes in Nigeria. When quality is obtained in teaching and learning, then, it becomes possible to achieve a high degree of excellence in adult education programmes. Explanation of concepts such as quality teaching and adult learning including their attributes, excellence, adult education coupled with its objectives, programmes and importance, were provided in the paper. Further discussed were issues that bordered on quality problems affecting teaching and learning for excellence and essential factors required for improving quality teaching and learning for excellence in adult education.
