Open World Multilevel Game for Teenagers and Adults

ABSTRACT

Falling Sky is an interesting 3D fast-paced game developed exclusively for the Windows platform. It requires the player to have quick reaction time and attentiveness. The game is designed in such a way that the level of difficulty increases as the player goes higher in level. The main aim of each level is to gather all the pickups and the level is completed. The pickups have been placed around the game arena in a manner that will allow the player to interact with every part of the play area. This allows the player to explore the whole level before completing it.

The observation research methodology and quantitative research methodology were used to evaluate if the idea was feasible or not to go ahead with. Data were obtained from the game distribution platform known as Steam. The feedback gotten from the Steam platform proved to be in favour of the development of games that fall into this genre. Marble It Up was used as a case study in the development of this game. The game’s review maintains its “Very Positive” standard on the Steam platform to date.

The feedback gotten from the game’s reviews proves that games must not have a huge budget, a huge team, or the best systems to make a game that becomes a fan favourite. As far as high quality is maintained during development, it is possible to get the most out of the game.

The development process was a long one because most of the time was used in learning the fundamentals of game design. It proved to be a success in the end, having passed all the functional testing and free of any error, the game proved to be up to standard.

Although, the game was designed in a way that will make room for further improvements and enhanced designs. This will be done to increase performance and create a wider reach in the gaming market.

In conclusion, the project proved to be a success. Firstly, by incorporating 3D technology and the power of C# programming language to create a game that was executed and running. Also, it passed all the functional requirements that had been set out for it from the beginning of the project.

CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

1.1     Overview

1.2     Background and Motivation

Humans have always played games, before the invention of the mobile phones, computers, and the wheel, games have always been a part of our lifestyle. Humans have evolved through the ages gone by, and the games we played were not left behind, adapting to the knowledge man has gained over the periods of time. As we grew in our respective civilizations, games became more logical, tasking and brain racking.

This was a major driving factor in choosing this as the final year project. Games allow the developers to express their creativity in the widest of ways. It’s a form of storytelling but as the developer, I am allowing you to partake in my story ad influence decisions. It’s important that as a game developer, there’s an appreciation for every single aspect of game development. From the planning phase to the, to the design and coding, every aspect is important. The most important factor to consider when developing a game is that a developer shouldn’t build a game, he/she wants but build a game that people will enjoy.

It is no doubt video games are a major source of entertainment to a huge fraction of the popularity, but they also have the abilities to solve problems. Not only are they used to entertain individuals but are incorporated into the education sector. Right from the invention of video games till now, they have kept growing and evolving. Not only did the gameplay get better but also the purpose of the game. Games are now incorporated into mental training, mathematics, language proficiency tests, etc. These are different fields where video games are incorporated to solve different problems.

It is important to know in a game, there is a need to include a gameplay style. Whether, it be puzzle, strategy, reaction-based: a game must have a nature and a way to get past it. For most games, it is generally acknowledged, there have to be elements of chance, skill, fun, and strategy. The degree to which these components are present varies by game, but the most essential variables are the strategy and the satisfaction the player gets from it.

1.3     Statement of the Problem

1.4     Aim and Objectives

The main aim of the study is to develop a digital game that will run on the Windows OS platform. In a society like ours, it is common for individuals to be worn out and heavily stressed. It has been known for a long-time video games have been one of many ways people relax and ease off. This project will be designed to serve that purpose for a wide range of individuals including adults, teenagers, and children ‘s entertainment.

The objectives of the proposed design include:

  1. To test the decision making of individuals.
  2. To provide a source of excitement and thrill to the users.
  • To create a form of challenge for the target market.
  1. To build the level of competence in individuals who play the game.
  2. To develop problem solving skills.

1.5     Significance of the Project

The design and development of video games has become a field of study that has seen as exponential growth in aspects such as the developers and the players of these games. It is important to build a project that will not only be satisfying to the customers but also be able to adapt to the flexibility of the market. The available features of the game, the efficiency and the aesthetics will have a major impact on influencing its popularity among the target market. This project will not only be of benefit to the developer but also to the Nigerian gaming community, proving that game design can become a thriving part of our economy.

One of the strong points of game design is how it utilizes different skills and technicalities to develop a game. Game developers are grouped into two major categories: codes developers and game designers. Falling Sky will allow the players to appreciate both categories of skills that make a game to be what it is. The concept of enjoyment, experience and engagement are of fundamental importance to both the players and developers. Falling Sky aims to bring the experience that most players desire, a feeling of enjoyment. Providing the escape from reality players desire, be it at home, at school or your workplace, it will do what it is meant to do, entertain.

1.6     Project Risks Assessment

This section defines the risks and dangers that could be encountered in the course of developing the project and the precautionary measures taken to avoid such challenges.

TABLE 1.1 – RISKS AND PRECAUTIONS

  RISKS                                             PRECAUTIONS

Inability to carry out research due to loss of hardware/software resources Observing security trends in the campus grounds.

Observing proper security protocols.

Maintaining habits that will prolong the existence of the hardware equipment.

Regularly cleaning the device of junk and obsolete data.

Loss of work due to equipment failure /loss

Weekly backup of project to external hard drive.

Weekly backup of project to Google Drive and Microsoft One Drive.

Regularly saving the project report on the text editor while working on it.

An anti-virus program was purchased to avoid any form of corruption on the computer system that can lead to the loss of the work.

Software availability (Unavailability of Unity assets and packages) Alternative assets and packages will be used.

Acquiring assets that are affordable and easy to work with.

Breakdown of software application. Regularly updating the software application to the latest version to avoid any drawbacks in developing the project.

An anti-virus program was purchased to avoid any form of corruption on the computer system tht could distort the operation of the software application.

Crashing of computer system. Since the demands of the software application on the computer system are high, a computer system with high specifications is used to develop the project.

Regularly updating the operating system of the computer device used.

An anti-virus program was purchased to avoid any form of corruption on the computer system that could crash the computer system.
