THE DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF ‘DRUG VERIFICATION SYSTEM’; A MOBILE WEB APPLICATION THAT HELPS PEOPLE AUTHENTICATE DRUGS

ABSTRACT

Setting up the legitimacy of an item's starting point is an issue confronting brand proprietors, traders and purchasers of results of all rang. Fake, or "imitation", stock misdirects purchasers and disintegrates the income of retailers and brand proprietors. Brand proprietors are quite often worried about fake items. Dealers and buyers can either see fakes as an inferior quality, over-evaluated trickery or a chance to set aside cash.

This examination work portrays three varieties of a medication confirmation data (DVI) framework and talks about how an item can be checked and the requirement for its confirmation. It further analyzes the security dangers to a DVI framework and countermeasures against such dangers.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1  Overview

A counterfeit prescription or drug is a drug that is supplied and sold in the expectation of misleading its origin, credibility, or effectiveness. A counterfeit drug may or may not contain inappropriate amounts of active ingredients, it may be improperly processed in the body (eg, counterfeit or mislabeled packaging and naming. Intentionally mislabeled drugs to mislead buyers, even mislabeled, but in all cases of authentic and non-exclusive drugs) - they are counterfeit. Counterfeit drugs are identified with misrepresentations in pharmaceutical products. Pharmaceutical manufacturers and wholesalers are gradually investing resources in countermeasures, such as innovations in identification and validation, to try to limit the effects of counterfeit drugs (Davison, 2011).

Fake therapeutic medications incorporate those with less or none of the expressed dynamic fixings, with added, some of the time risky, debasements, subbed fixings, totally distorted, or sold with a bogus brand name. Something else, authentic medications that have passed their date of expiry are at times commented with bogus dates. Inferior quality fake medicine might cause any of a few hazardous wellbeing results, including incidental effects or hypersensitive responses, notwithstanding their conspicuous absence of adequacy due to having less or none of their dynamic fixings. Since duplicating is hard to distinguish, examine, evaluate, or stop, the amount of fake medicine is hard to decide. In 2003, the World Health Organization refered to gauges that the yearly profit from unacceptable as well as fake medications were over US$32 billion (WHO, 2012).

The immense distinction between the expense of assembling fake medications and the costs charged by forgers is a rewarding impetus. Pseudo-anti-infection agents with a low grouping of dynamic fixings will invigorate the endurance of microbes to foster opposition and cause harm around the world. An incomplete course of anti-infection treatment can be risky and even perilous. On the off chance that a low-intensity fake medication is involved, the consummation of a course of therapy can't be completely viable. Fake medications have been known to be associated with clinical medication preliminaries

Background and motivation

For quite a long time, Nigeria has been tormented by fake and low quality prescriptions, yet little data exists on the degree to which medical care staff know about fake and unacceptable drugs, and how this impacts their conduct. Phony and unacceptable medications collected a weighty expense in both financial terms and in lives lost. In 1990, 109 kids kicked the bucket subsequent to being controlled phony paracetamol. Reports in the Nigerian media recommended that there was developing protection from normal first-line antimalarials probably determined by both nonsensical medication use (patients utilizing some unacceptable meds, in the incorrect way) and the pervasiveness of inadequate medication (Reef, 2008).

Consequently the Nigerian government made an association from the Ministry of Health expressly instructed to deal with the situation of fake consumable things. The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) is the Nigerian government office under the Federal Ministry of Health that is obligated for overseeing and controlling the creation, importation, exportation, advertisement, transport, arrangement and usage of food, drugs, excellence care items, clinical devices, engineered materials and prepackaged water (Wikipedia Online Encyclopedia, 2012).

Upgrades have been made in the earlier decade, headed partially by the authority of the NAFDAC body, under then Director General Dora Akunyili, which improved policing and arraignment of falsifiers. By 2006, the amount of inadmissible and phony prescriptions streaming in Nigeria's market had tumbled to around 16%, NAFDAC uncovered, and Nigerians were dependably situating NAFDAC as among the best of Nigeria's organization workplaces.

Despite the different achievements of the Agency over the earlier decade, the fake prescriptions thing really sort out some way to channel their bearing to the counters and resigns of pharmacies and convenience stores where dumbfounded clients get them and stand the risk of suffering design outrageous sudden issues.

1.3 Statement of the problem

The main problem faced by the general public when purchasing consumable products is the risk of purchasing a fake or substandard product. To this end the NAFDAC body has put in place measures to provide checks against the purchase of fake consumable item. This has been achieved through the registration of the products and the issuance of NAFDAC numbers for each product.

However these numbers on the products cannot be verified by the consumers who purchase them. The lack of a readily available platform solely designed for the purpose of allowing consumers verify NAFDAC numbers on the products that they are purchasing is another concrete issue that this research project seeks to address.

1.4 Aims and objectives

The design and implementation of an online platform solely developed for the purpose of allowing consumers verify NAFDAC numbers on the products that they are purchasing is the sole aim of this Research Project. This Project will be implemented with a view towards achieving the following objectives;

  • Provision of an online platform for produce NAFDAC number verification.
  • Design of a portal interface to enable officials of the NAFDAC agency manage information about registered drugs
  • Provision of a Fake Product Report Form to enable consumers, whose items have been found not to have the number, report information about such products to the Agency.
  • Development of an online database system to facilitate the storage of data about the products registered.
  • Utilization of a User Friendly interface to enable user of the system enjoy a stress-free experience while interacting with it.
  • To develop a system that will be interactive mobile and web application that can be used in verifying the authenticity of drugs with a digit generated code.
  • To develop a Web-based application to query the drug database for verification using verification pin.
  • To develop a web-based application for drug manufacturers registration, drug registration and verification pin generation.
  • To develop a web-based system that will empower consumers to verify the authenticity of drugs at the point of purchase.
  • To develop a system that customer can access to update date of drugs.
  • To develop a web-based system that will show a drugs summary to the customer.

1.5      Significance of the study

Through the successful implementation of this research project, consumers of products In Nigeria will be able to actively root out the menace of fake drugs circulated around the country. This will be made possible through the proposed NAFDAC Online Drug Registration and Verification Solution.

Countless lives will be spared the torments of suffering from fake or substandard consumable products and the NAFDAC body will be assisted in their fight against the scourge as the new system will enable consumers from all parts of the country submit information about products that were found wanting, from which the source of the defaulting products can be traced by staff of the Agency.

1.6    Project risks assessment

This research project will be limited to the Registration and Verification of drug products only. Other consumable products will not be considered for the purpose of this research project. The source of data to be used for this work will come majorly from the internet. Also, a demo data generated from the internet will be used in developing the proposed system

1.7       Scope of the study

The scope of this Project Research will cover the design and implementation of a Web Based NAFDAC Drug Verification System for members of the General Public to use for the verification of the authentication of drugs purchased from the drug stores in the country.

This will also include the development of a web portal integrated into the website so as to enable officials of the agency upload information about drug products verified by the agency into the System’s information database.

The remaining part of the project includes; Chapter Two: Literature reviews, which covers through a brief history on the case study, and the technology used in developing the proposed system. The Chapter Three contains the System Requirement needed for the execution of the proposed system, its analysis and design, its tools and techniques. Chapter Four covers through the Implementation, Testing and Debugging. The Final Chapter (Chapter Five) contains the summary, and recommendation of the project.
