Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Hygiene and sanitation practices are essential for preventing the spread of infectious diseases and maintaining public health. However, in underserved communities, access to proper sanitation facilities and knowledge about hygiene practices are often limited. This leads to increased vulnerability to diseases and poor health outcomes among community members.
Community Health Workers (CHWs) play a vital role in promoting health and well-being within their communities, particularly in resource-constrained settings. CHWs are individuals who are selected and trained to provide basic healthcare services, health education, and health promotion activities within their communities. They have the potential to be effective agents for promoting hygiene and sanitation practices, raising awareness, and facilitating behavior change.
The University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH) is a tertiary healthcare institution located in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. With its reach and community engagement programs, UUTH has the potential to leverage CHWs to address hygiene and sanitation challenges in underserved communities. This research aims to evaluate the impact of CHWs on promoting hygiene and sanitation practices in underserved communities within the UUTH catchment area.
1.2 Research Aim and Objectives
The aim of this research is to evaluate the impact of Community Health Workers on promoting hygiene and sanitation practices in underserved communities, with a specific focus on the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH) catchment area. The objectives of the study include:
- To assess the current level of hygiene and sanitation practices in underserved communities within the UUTH catchment area.
- To examine the roles and responsibilities of Community Health Workers in promoting hygiene and sanitation practices.
- To evaluate the effectiveness of CHW-led interventions in improving hygiene and sanitation practices among community members.
- To identify the facilitators and barriers to the implementation of CHW-led hygiene and sanitation programs.
- To provide recommendations for enhancing the impact of CHWs in promoting hygiene and sanitation practices in underserved communities.
1.3 Research Questions
To guide this research, the following research questions will be addressed:

1.4 Significance of the Study
This research project holds several significance.
