Chapter One:

General Introduction

1.1            Background of the Study

Throughout church history, deliverance ministry has held a central place in the spiritual practices of believers. From the early church fathers to the modern-day charismatic movement, the pursuit of deliverance aligns with the scriptural emphasis on overcoming spiritual strongholds and living in the freedom found in Christ. The recognition of deliverance as a pathway to deeper intimacy with God and liberation from spiritual bondage has persisted across centuries. The role of deliverance ministry has been a significant aspect of Christian faith and practice throughout history. Deliverance ministry involves the spiritual process of setting individuals free from spiritual oppression, bondage, and demonic influences through prayer, fasting, and reliance on the power of God. The concept of deliverance is rooted in the belief that humanity is engaged in a spiritual battle against forces of darkness, as described in various passages of the Bible. In the context of church growth, deliverance ministry has often been seen as a powerful tool for facilitating spiritual transformation and fostering effective growth within Christian congregations.

Deliverance ministry finds its roots in the sacred texts of the Bible, where numerous instances of spiritual liberation and freedom are depicted. The Old Testament narratives are replete with stories of God's intervention to deliver His people from bondage and oppression. The exodus of the Israelites from Egypt (Exodus 14) stands as a cornerstone example of God's deliverance, symbolizing freedom from captivity and the establishment of a covenant relationship.                                                                                   In the New Testament, the ministry of Jesus Christ exemplifies the core tenets of deliverance. He proclaimed freedom to the captives, recovery of sight to the blind, and the release of the oppressed (Luke 4:18-19). The acts of casting out demons, healing the afflicted, and restoring broken lives encapsulate the essence of deliverance ministry that extends beyond physical manifestations to spiritual transformation. The convergence of deliverance ministry, church growth, and spiritual transformation forms the cornerstone of this study. By exploring the relationship between these elements, this research seeks to illuminate how the principles of deliverance, deeply ingrained in biblical narratives and historical practices, intersect with the contemporary pursuit of vibrant congregational growth and individual spiritual maturation.
