THE PROBLEMS CONFRONTED BY RECORD LABELS IN SIGNING YOUNG ARTISTS IN THE NIGERIA MUSIC INDUSTRY.

ABSTRACT

This cross-sectional survey study investigates the challenges faced by record labels in signing young artists in the Nigerian music industry. A random sample of 240 respondents, comprising youths aged at least 18 years from Lagos State, participated in the study. The data was collected through a questionnaire to assess the challenges encountered by record labels in identifying and developing young talent. Descriptive statistics and t-test analysis were employed to analyze the data. The findings reveal significant challenges for record labels, including the lack of adequate infrastructure, artists’ inclination towards independence due to online music distribution platforms, contract disputes, and the absence of industry regulation. Additionally, the dominance of established artists was found to limit resources available for scouting and nurturing young talents. Regarding the hypotheses, no significant difference was observed in the opinions of male and female youths concerning the challenges faced by record labels in identifying and discovering young talent. Similarly, no significant difference was found in the opinions of male and female youths regarding the problems in managing and developing the careers of young artists within record labels. These findings highlight the need for record labels to address these challenges to promote sustainable growth in the Nigerian music industry. Further research could explore strategies for overcoming these obstacles and fostering a more conducive environment for nurturing and promoting young talents in the music industry.
