Evaluating the Energy Generation Potential of Solid Wastes in Abuja Municipal

ABSTRACT:

Improper solid waste management in Abuja metropolis poses significant health and environmental hazards to its inhabitants. To mitigate the effects of pollution from open dumps and landfills, this study explores the potential of converting solid waste into energy. Specifically, it focuses on assessing the energy generation capabilities of the solid waste produced in Abuja municipal.

The study involved the examination of four waste samples from two sites, Gossa and Kubwa, to determine their energy conversion potential. The research encompassed characterizing the physical properties of the waste, conducting proximate and ultimate analyses, assessing the caloric value, and predicting the total estimated caloric value of solid waste in Abuja.

Each waste sample, except for caloric value analysis, was measured at 0.5 grams. For the caloric value analysis, a sample size of 0.6 kilograms was used for each waste type. Proximate analyses showed that SW1 (food, wood, and paper) had a moisture content of 14.68%, SW2 (textile, rubber, and plastic) had 16.58% moisture content, SW3 (metal-aluminium) had 0.11% moisture content, and SW4 (glass and ceramics) had 0.1% moisture content. The volatile matter in SW1, SW2, SW3, and SW4 was found to be 49.41%, 55.37%, 0.13%, and 0.29%, respectively. Furthermore, the ash content for the listed samples was 9.92%, 13.50%, 0.35%, and 0.12%, respectively, while the fixed carbon content (FCC) was 25.99%, 14.55%, 99.41%, and 99.49%, respectively.

Ultimate analyses revealed that three samples had a high mass ratio of carbon content, specifically samples A1, A2, and B2. Carbon represented 15.6%, 22.28%, and 13.22% of these samples, respectively, signifying the carbon-fuel within the waste. The predicted caloric value of the waste was determined to be 0.123 MJ/kg.

In conclusion, utilizing solid waste as an alternative energy source for electricity generation could prove highly beneficial, leading to improved growth and development for the nation as a whole. Proper waste-to-energy conversion could help minimize pollution and environmental impacts while providing a sustainable energy solution.
