AN EVALUATION OF THE IDENTITY AND BELONGING OF ECWA BELIEVERS IN CHRIST: EXPLORING THE CHALLENGE OF CHRISTIAN IDENTITY RECLAMATION
Abstract:
This study delves into a significant challenge faced by women within contemporary church environments: their exclusion from ordained ministry. Despite their active involvement in contributing to mission work and increasing enrollment of women in theological education, the refusal to ordain women remains a source of ambiguity, frustration, and vulnerability. This issue is particularly pronounced in the Church of Christ in Nigeria, where gender disparities are perpetuated by traditional norms and doctrinal conflicts.
This research investigates the impediments to achieving gender equality within the ordained ministry, highlighting the societal constructs and religious conventions that hinder progress. It becomes evident that prevailing notions of labor division along gender lines and the subordination of women adversely impact various aspects of women’s lives. Through extensive examination, it is revealed that women are often treated as possessions, relegated to secondary status, and confronted with restricted economic and leadership prospects, when compared to men.
This study meticulously analyzes the ecclesiological intricacies surrounding the ordination of women to pastoral roles, contending that the exclusion of women from ordination is a contrived sociological construct that perpetuates oppression and obstructs their advancement. By shedding light on these issues, the study aims to contribute to a broader understanding of the challenges women face in reclaiming their rightful place in ordained ministry, thereby fostering a more inclusive and equitable religious community.
