EFFECTS OF COMPUTER SIMULATION ON GEOGRAPHY LEARNING IN NIGER STATE SECONDARY STUDENTS
Abstract:
This research delved into exploring the impact of Computer Simulation on the academic performance and knowledge retention in Geography among secondary school students in Niger State, taking gender and retention factors into account. The study involved a sample of one hundred and twenty (120) students selected from four secondary schools in Minna Metropolis. Employing a pretest-posttest control group design, the experimental group received instruction through the utilization of a Computer Simulation Package (CSP), while the control group was taught using traditional lecture methods. All research materials were developed by the investigator and subsequently validated by subject matter experts. A Geography Achievement Test (GAT) comprising 20 items was employed for data collection and underwent expert validation. The gathered data were subjected to statistical analysis, utilizing mean, standard deviation, and t-test measurements in accordance with the formulated hypotheses, which were tested at a significance level of 0.05. The research formulated four research questions and corresponding hypotheses to guide the investigation. The results highlighted the efficacy of incorporating CSP or computer software in educational settings, suggesting that its use significantly enhanced both the teaching and learning experiences in the field of geography. As a result of these findings, it is recommended that educational institutions encourage the integration of CSP into their pedagogical approaches, given its potential to enrich the learning process in geography and beyond.
