ADSORPTION OF CHROMIUM(VI) AND COPPER(II) USING PECTIN-CHITOSAN COMPLEX IN CHALLAWA WELL WATER

Abstract:

In this research, we investigated the adsorption potential of a pectin-chitosan polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) as an adsorbent for the removal of chromium(VI) and copper(II) ions from well water. Our study focused on determining the optimal pH and pectin/chitosan ratio for PEC synthesis, as well as characterizing the resulting complex using FTIR, BET, XRD, and SEM techniques. We assessed the removal efficiency of PEC under optimized conditions, which included a 0.4 g adsorbent mass, initial copper and chromium concentrations of 1.221 mg/L and 0.12 mg/L, a temperature of 60°C, and a contact time of 30 minutes.

Our findings revealed that the most effective pH for PEC formation was pH 4, with an ideal pectin/chitosan ratio of 1:3. FTIR analysis identified active groups such as NH2 and OH from carboxylate groups, and BET analysis indicated a particle size of 2 nm and a surface area of 377 m2/g for PEC. Under the optimized conditions mentioned earlier, PEC exhibited impressive adsorption capacities of 333.33 mg/g for Cu2+ and 270.27 mg/g for Cr6+ when the initial concentrations were 1.221 mg/L and 0.12 mg/L, respectively.

Furthermore, our study included a rigorous analysis of adsorption isotherm and kinetic models, revealing that the Langmuir isothermal model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model provided excellent fits to the data. Thermodynamic analysis showed negative ∆G° values, indicative of the spontaneity of the adsorption process, with ∆Ho values of 53.39 and 51.67 kJ/mol for copper and chromium, respectively, and ∆So values of 0.163 and 0.167 J/mol·K for the respective ions. Overall, our research supports the conclusion that PEC effectively and spontaneously adsorbs heavy metal ions (Cu2+ and Cr6+) through a single-layer chemisorption process.
