EXECUTION OF A 60:40 ADMISSION POLICY FOR SCIENCE AND ARTS PROGRAMS IN KWARA STATE’S TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS
Abstract:
This research delved into the implementation of a 60:40 admission policy for science and arts courses within the tertiary institutions of Kwara state during the academic sessions spanning from 2011/2012 to 2015/2016. The study employed the Content Analysis Research Design Approach (CARDA) as its methodology. The study population encompassed Thirty-Six Thousand Two Hundred and Eighty-Seven (36,287) candidates who were granted admission over the course of five academic sessions (2011-2016). A purposive sampling technique was utilized for the research, generating three research questions and formulating and testing three hypotheses at a 0.05 level of significance.
The data collected underwent analysis using One-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) with the support of the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 21.00 software. The study’s findings revealed that, on average, 48.35% of candidates secured admission into Kwara State tertiary institutions in science-related programs, while 51.65% were admitted to arts-related programs. This figure falls short of the 60% policy favoring science courses, as opposed to the 40% allocation to arts courses outlined in the Federal Government of Nigeria’s National Policy on Education.
Furthermore, the research disclosed that there was no significant difference between the number of students admitted to science-related courses and those admitted to arts-related courses in Kwara state tertiary institutions from 2011 to 2016. This suggests a need to highlight successful female scientists and engineers while fostering a culture of mentorship and role models within the educational system.
