UTILIZING AEROMAGNETIC DATA FOR SPECTRAL DEPTH ESTIMATION AND UPWARD CONTINUATION ANALYSIS IN NIGERIA

ABSTRACT:

This research employs spectral depth and upward continuation analyses of residual magnetic field data within segments of the Borno Basin. The primary objective is to gain insights into the subsurface structure and assess the hydrocarbon potential of this region. The study area spans from latitude 12°00′ to 13°50′ North and longitude 12°00′ to 13°50′ East, encompassing eight aeromagnetic maps. These maps were digitized on a 19×19 grid and compiled into a composite dataset, leading to the creation of an integrated map of the area. The Polynomial filtering technique was applied to achieve regional-residual separation. Subsequently, the filtered residual map underwent Fourier transformation, involving the division of the entire area into sixteen overlapping blocks. The resulting logarithmic spectral energy and frequency plots enabled the estimation of magnetic source depths.

Depth Estimations: The first layer’s depth varies within a range of 0.18 km (minimum) to 0.37 km (maximum). This initial magnetic layer is attributed to lateritic ironstone, ferruginous sandstone, and the influence of surrounding basement rocks. On the other hand, the second layer (h2) exhibits depth variations from a minimum thickness of 1.79 km to a maximum of 5.34 km. The second layer’s origins can be ascribed to magnetic rocks intruded onto the basement surface, lateral discontinuities in basement susceptibilities, and the presence of inter-basement features like faults and fractures. This second layer primarily represents the depth to the basement in the study area, and its maximum thickness is recorded at 5.34 km.

Interpretation: The depth contour map of the second layer (h2) and a 10 km upward continuation map of the total magnetic intensity for the study area reveal significant information. Particularly, the northeastern region between the specified latitudinal boundaries…
