ABSTRACT

This case study investigates the influence and effectiveness of assistive technology in improving the academic performance of students with learning disabilities in Nigerian schools. Recognizing the potential of technology to address diverse learning needs, this research employs a mixed-methods approach, incorporating academic assessments, surveys, and qualitative interviews. The study encompasses a diverse sample of students with various learning disabilities across different educational settings in Nigeria. Findings underscore the transformative impact of assistive technology on the academic achievement of students with learning disabilities. Customized assistive tools and technologies, including text-to-speech software, speech recognition applications, and digital reading platforms, significantly enhance reading comprehension, written expression, and overall learning outcomes. The study identifies specific factors influencing the successful integration of assistive technology, such as accessibility, training, and ongoing support. the research also uncovers challenges in the adoption of assistive technology, including limited access to specialized devices and software, the need for targeted training for educators, and considerations for affordability and infrastructure. Additionally, cultural perceptions and attitudes towards learning disabilities and technology may influence the acceptance and utilization of assistive technology within the Nigerian educational context. this case study have significant implications for inclusive education policy and practice in Nigeria. Recommendations are provided for the further development and integration of assistive technology initiatives, emphasizing increased investment in technology resources, professional development for educators, and community awareness campaigns to promote understanding and support for assistive technology. This research contributes to the broader discourse on inclusive education and the empowerment of students with learning disabilities. By showcasing the effectiveness of assistive technology within the Nigerian context, this study advocates for the widespread adoption and integration of evidence-based practices to create inclusive learning environments. The insights gleaned from this case study can serve as a foundation for further research and inform best practices in supporting students with learning disabilities not only in Nigeria but also in diverse global educational contexts.
