Analysis and Typing of Staphylococcus aureus Strains Recovered from Door Handles at the University of Calabar

ABSTRACT

This study provides a detailed analysis of Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from door handles within the University of Calabar campus. The aim was to characterize the genetic and phenotypic profiles of these strains, shedding light on potential sources of transmission and the prevalence of specific virulence factors. Isolates were collected over a period of six months and subjected to genotypic and phenotypic analyses. Molecular typing methods, including pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and multi-locus sequence typing (MLST), were employed to assess genetic relatedness among the isolates. Additionally, phenotypic assays were conducted to determine antibiotic susceptibility and the presence of key virulence determinants. Results revealed a diverse population of S. aureus strains with varying genetic backgrounds. Phenotypic analyses unveiled variations in antibiotic resistance profiles and virulence factor expression. This study underscores the importance of routine surveillance and hygiene practices in high-traffic areas such as university campuses to mitigate the potential spread of pathogenic microorganisms.
