Occurrence of Salmonella and Shigella Species in Ready-to-Eat Game Meat Distributed Across Various Cities in Southwestern Nigeria

ABSTRACT

This study investigates the occurrence of Salmonella and Shigella species in ready-to-eat game meat distributed across several cities in Southwestern Nigeria. The prevalence of these pathogenic bacteria in such meat products poses a potential public health concern. Samples were collected from various vendors and subjected to microbiological analysis. Isolates were identified using standard biochemical and molecular methods. Results revealed a noteworthy presence of both Salmonella and Shigella species, indicating a potential risk of foodborne infections associated with the consumption of game meat. This study highlights the importance of stringent hygiene practices and thorough cooking of game meat to mitigate the potential health hazards posed by these pathogens
