Abstract:

This study delves into the intricate realm of labor rights within the context of professional sports, with a focus on the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL). In recent years, the spotlight on labor rights issues in sports has grown brighter, drawing attention to the rights and working conditions of athletes. This research investigates the labor rights landscape in the NPFL, aiming to shed light on the experiences and challenges faced by football professionals in Nigeria.

Employing a mixed-methods approach, this study combines qualitative interviews with players, coaches, and league officials, alongside a comprehensive review of relevant legal frameworks and contractual agreements. The research explores a range of pertinent topics, including contractual terms, wage disparities, dispute resolution mechanisms, and access to essential benefits such as healthcare and insurance.

Through a comparative analysis of international standards and practices, this research assesses the extent to which NPFL aligns with global labor rights norms. It also examines the influence of cultural, economic, and regulatory factors on the labor rights landscape in Nigerian football.

Findings from this study provide critical insights into the challenges and opportunities facing sports professionals in Nigeria and offer recommendations for policy reforms and industry practices aimed at improving labor rights within the NPFL. This research contributes to the broader discourse on labor rights in sports and underscores the importance of ensuring equitable and fair treatment for athletes in the pursuit of a sustainable and thriving professional sports industry.
