This principle places the financial burden of environmental harm on those responsible for causing it, thereby incentivizing pollution prevention and control. However, the applicability and effectiveness of the Polluter Pays Principle within the unique socio-economic and environmental context of Nigeria have been a subject of ongoing debate.

This abstract offers an appraisal of the applicability of the PPP in the Nigerian context. Nigeria, a developing nation with a rapidly growing population and expanding industrial base, faces significant environmental challenges resulting from pollution, resource extraction, and other human activities.
