EVALUATING THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS OF SILVOPASTORAL SYSTEMS IN AGROFORESTRY
Abstract:
Agroforestry, the intentional integration of trees and livestock within agricultural landscapes, has gained prominence as a sustainable land-use practise aimed at addressing multiple challenges, including food security, climate change mitigation, and rural development. Among agroforestry systems, silvopastoral systems, which combine tree cultivation with livestock grazing, hold significant promise. This research project aims to evaluate the socio-economic and environmental benefits of silvopastoral systems to provide a comprehensive understanding of their potential contribution to sustainable agriculture and rural livelihoods.
This project will employ a multi-disciplinary approach, utilising a combination of field surveys, socio-economic assessments, and environmental monitoring to assess the following key aspects:
- Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services: We will investigate how silvopastoral systems influence biodiversity, soil health, carbon sequestration, and microclimatic conditions. The research will examine the potential of these systems to enhance ecosystem services such as pollination, water regulation, and nutrient cycling.
- Socio-Economic Impacts: We will assess the socio-economic benefits for farmers, including income generation, diversification of livelihoods, and improved resilience to climate change. This aspect will involve household surveys and economic analyses to understand the livelihood implications for participating communities.
- Livestock Performance: The project will evaluate how silvopastoral systems influence livestock health, productivity, and well-being. Data will be collected on animal growth rates, milk production, and disease incidence, among other factors.
- Community Perceptions and Adoption: We will conduct surveys and interviews to understand the perceptions and adoption of silvopastoral systems by farmers and the wider community. Identifying barriers and incentives for adoption will be a key focus.
- Policy and Institutional Analysis: An assessment of the policy and institutional frameworks surrounding agroforestry and silvopastoral systems will be conducted to identify potential policy interventions that can promote their wider adoption.
The findings of this research project are expected to contribute to the knowledge base on agroforestry and sustainable land management practises. It will also inform policy and decision-makers about the potential benefits and challenges associated with the widespread adoption of silvopastoral systems. Ultimately, this research aims to provide evidence-based recommendations for sustainable and integrated land-use practises that enhance rural livelihoods, conserve biodiversity, and mitigate environmental degradation.
