OPERATOR THEORY AND ANALYTIC FUNCTIONS

ABSTRACT

The theory of analytic functions plays a fundamental role in operator theory, providing valuable methods, examples, and solutions to various problems. One area where analytic function theory has been applied is in the study of weighted shifts, as we will explore in this thesis. Building upon the influential work of A. L. Shields, we aim to provide a comprehensive examination of the relationship between weighted shift operators and analytic functions.

The key idea underlying this investigation is to view a weighted shift operator as “multiplication by z” within a Hilbert space comprising formal power/Laurent series. By demonstrating that this space possesses an analytic structure, we establish the essential foundation for our analysis. This analytic nature enables us to employ multiplication operators and bounded point evaluations, two powerful tools widely recognized for their efficacy in solving a wide range of problems in operator theory.
