EVALUATION OF OPTIMAL POSITION OF ESP FOR OPTIMUM RATE IN HORIZONTAL WELL

Abstract:
Horizontal wells have become increasingly popular in the oil and gas industry due to their ability to enhance hydrocarbon recovery and increase production rates. In horizontal wells, the placement of the electrical submersible pump (ESP) plays a crucial role in optimizing the production rate. This paper presents an evaluation of the optimal position of the ESP in a horizontal well to achieve the highest possible production rate.

The evaluation process begins with a comprehensive review of the reservoir characteristics, including formation properties, fluid properties, and well geometry. Next, the study focuses on the determination of the reservoir’s flow profile, which provides insights into the fluid behavior and pressure distribution along the wellbore.

Using numerical reservoir simulation techniques, various ESP configurations and positions are simulated and assessed to identify the most favorable location for maximum production rate. Key factors considered during the evaluation include the ESP depth, distance to the toe or heel of the well, and the presence of any near-wellbore heterogeneities or flow restrictions.

The evaluation process also incorporates sensitivity analyses to investigate the impact of different reservoir and operational parameters on the optimal ESP position. These parameters may include reservoir permeability, fluid viscosity, reservoir pressure, and ESP operating parameters.

The results of the evaluation provide valuable insights into the optimal placement of the ESP in horizontal wells. By identifying the most favorable location, operators can enhance production rates, reduce operational costs, and maximize the ultimate recovery of hydrocarbons from the reservoir.

This study contributes to the understanding of ESP optimization in horizontal wells and provides practical guidance for reservoir engineers and production operators in designing and operating these wells efficiently. Additionally, the findings highlight the importance of considering reservoir and operational parameters to achieve the desired production rates in horizontal wells equipped with ESPs.
