Abstract:
Slug flow is a common two-phase flow pattern that occurs in pipelines and is characterized by the periodic formation of elongated gas or liquid slugs surrounded by a continuous phase. Understanding the hydrodynamic behavior of slug flow is crucial for various industrial applications, ranging from oil and gas transportation to chemical processing. This abstract presents a study on the hydrodynamic behavior of slug flow at an 80° angle off the horizontal pipe, employing Electrical Capacitance Tomography (ECT) data.

Electrical Capacitance Tomography is a non-invasive imaging technique that utilizes the measurement of capacitance variations across an imaging domain to reconstruct the distribution of dielectric materials. In the context of two-phase flow, ECT has been widely employed to investigate the flow patterns, phase distributions, and hydrodynamic characteristics.

In this study, experimental data obtained from an ECT system installed on a pipeline operating at an 80° angle off the horizontal plane were analyzed. The focus was on slug flow, where alternating slugs of gas and liquid phases were observed. The ECT data provided real-time measurements of the capacitance distribution, allowing for the reconstruction of the two-phase flow behavior.

The hydrodynamic behavior of slug flow was investigated by analyzing the ECT data, which provided insights into slug length, slug velocity, and the interfacial area between the gas and liquid phases. The influence of the pipe inclination angle on the slug flow characteristics was examined, particularly in comparison to slug flow in a horizontal pipe.

The findings of this study contribute to the understanding of slug flow behavior under non-horizontal pipe orientations and provide valuable insights for pipeline design and operation. The utilization of ECT data enables the non-intrusive monitoring and characterization of slug flow, facilitating improved process control and optimization.
