COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF RESERVES DETERMINATION TECHNIQUES IN OVERPRESSURED GAS RESERVOIRS

Abstract:
Overpressured gas reservoirs pose unique challenges in accurately determining reserves due to complex geological and fluid dynamic characteristics. This study aims to provide a comparative analysis of different techniques used to determine reserves in overpressured gas reservoirs. The analysis includes an evaluation of traditional methods such as material balance, pressure transient analysis, and volumetric calculations, as well as more advanced techniques like numerical simulation and analytical models.

The comparative analysis considers various factors, including reservoir heterogeneity, fluid behavior, and well performance, to assess the strengths and limitations of each technique. The accuracy, reliability, and applicability of these methods in overpressured gas reservoirs are evaluated based on case studies and industry practices.

Material balance methods rely on mass conservation principles and require accurate data on production rates, fluid properties, and reservoir pressure behavior. Pressure transient analysis techniques utilize pressure build-up and drawdown data to estimate reservoir properties, such as permeability and skin factor. Volumetric calculations involve estimating the hydrocarbon volume in the reservoir based on geological and fluid properties.

Numerical simulation techniques employ complex mathematical models to simulate reservoir behavior, considering factors such as reservoir geometry, fluid flow, and rock properties. Analytical models provide simplified yet insightful solutions to estimate reserves using mathematical equations and empirical correlations.

The comparative analysis highlights the advantages and disadvantages of each technique. Traditional methods are often limited by assumptions and simplifications that may not capture the complexities of overpressured gas reservoirs accurately. Advanced techniques like numerical simulation offer higher fidelity but require extensive data and computational resources.

The results of this study will help reservoir engineers and professionals in the oil and gas industry to select appropriate techniques for reserves determination in overpressured gas reservoirs based on reservoir characteristics, available data, and project requirements. Additionally, it will identify areas for further research and development to enhance the accuracy and reliability of reserves determination techniques in overpressured gas reservoirs.
