NEW TYPE CURVES FOR THE ANALYSIS OF PRESSURE TRANSIENT DATA OF HORIZONTAL WELLS IN NON-NEWTONIAN FLUID RESERVOIRS

Abstract:
In the exploration and production of hydrocarbon reservoirs, horizontal wells have gained significant attention due to their ability to maximize contact with the reservoir and enhance production rates. However, the analysis of pressure transient data from horizontal wells in non-Newtonian fluid reservoirs presents unique challenges. Non-Newtonian fluids exhibit complex rheological behavior, which complicates the interpretation of pressure data and requires specialized analysis techniques.

This study presents a novel approach to analyzing pressure transient data from horizontal wells in non-Newtonian fluid reservoirs through the development of new type curves. Type curves are graphical representations of pressure behavior that allow for the interpretation of reservoir properties. The proposed type curves are specifically designed to account for the non-Newtonian nature of the fluid and the horizontal well geometry.

The development of the new type curves involved a comprehensive review of the existing literature on pressure transient analysis and non-Newtonian fluid behavior. The rheological properties of the fluid were characterized using appropriate models, such as power-law or Herschel-Bulkley models, which capture the shear-thinning or shear-thickening behavior commonly observed in non-Newtonian fluids.

The newly developed type curves were validated using numerical simulations and compared with conventional type curves used for Newtonian fluids. The results demonstrated the superior accuracy and reliability of the proposed type curves in capturing the pressure behavior of horizontal wells in non-Newtonian fluid reservoirs.

The application of the new type curves was further illustrated through a case study. Real field data from a horizontal well in a non-Newtonian fluid reservoir were analyzed using the proposed approach, and the reservoir properties, such as permeability and skin factor, were estimated. The results highlighted the effectiveness of the new type curves in providing accurate and reliable reservoir characterization in non-Newtonian fluid systems.

Overall, this study contributes to the field of pressure transient analysis by introducing new type curves specifically tailored for horizontal wells in non-Newtonian fluid reservoirs. The proposed approach enhances the understanding of fluid flow behavior in such reservoirs and enables more accurate reservoir characterization, leading to improved reservoir management and production optimization.
