ASSESSMENT OF HEAVY METAL POLLUTION IN SOIL AND SURFACE WATER IN MNG-GOLD, KOKOYA DISTRICT, BONG COUNTY, LIBERIA

Abstract:
Heavy metal pollution in soil and surface water is a global environmental concern due to its potential adverse effects on ecosystems and human health. This study aims to assess the extent of heavy metal pollution in soil and surface water in the MNG-Gold mining area, located in the Kokoya District of Bong County, Liberia.

A comprehensive sampling campaign was conducted to collect soil and surface water samples from various locations within the mining area. The concentrations of heavy metals, including lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), chromium (Cr), and mercury (Hg), were analyzed using state-of-the-art analytical techniques such as atomic absorption spectrometry.

The results revealed elevated concentrations of heavy metals in both soil and surface water samples compared to background levels. The highest levels of contamination were observed near the mining operations, indicating potential sources of heavy metal pollution. The spatial distribution of heavy metals demonstrated a clear gradient, with concentrations decreasing with distance from the mining site.

Furthermore, the study evaluated the potential ecological and health risks associated with heavy metal pollution. Ecological risk assessment indicated that some of the heavy metals exceeded the threshold values, posing a risk to aquatic organisms in the surface water bodies. Human health risk assessment revealed that the levels of heavy metals in soil and surface water exceeded the acceptable limits, suggesting a potential health risk to local communities through the ingestion of contaminated water or food grown in the area.

The findings of this study highlight the urgent need for effective pollution control measures and remediation strategies in the MNG-Gold mining area to mitigate the adverse environmental and health impacts of heavy metal contamination. The results can contribute to the development of environmental management plans and regulatory frameworks to protect both the environment and the well-being of local communities.
