ABRASIVE WEAR STUDIES OF PACK CYANIDED MILD STEEL (PCMS)

Abstract:

Abrasive wear is a significant concern in various industrial applications where materials are subjected to sliding or rolling contact with abrasive particles. In recent years, pack cyaniding has emerged as a surface treatment technique to improve the wear resistance of mild steel components. This study aims to investigate the abrasive wear behavior of Pack Cyanided Mild Steel (PCMS) and evaluate its potential as a wear-resistant material.

The experimental approach involved preparing PCMS samples through a pack cyaniding process, which involves the diffusion of carbon and nitrogen into the mild steel surface. The cyaniding treatment was carried out under controlled temperature and atmosphere conditions. The resulting PCMS samples were characterized for microstructural analysis using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques.

Abrasive wear tests were conducted using a pin-on-disc apparatus, where the PCMS samples were subjected to controlled sliding contact against an abrasive medium. The wear behavior of PCMS was evaluated by measuring parameters such as wear rate, coefficient of friction, and surface roughness. Comparative tests were performed on untreated mild steel samples for reference.

The results indicated that pack cyaniding significantly improved the abrasive wear resistance of mild steel. The PCMS samples exhibited a reduced wear rate, lower coefficient of friction, and improved surface roughness compared to untreated mild steel. The microstructural analysis revealed the formation of a hardened surface layer with increased carbon and nitrogen content, contributing to the enhanced wear resistance.

The findings of this study contribute to the understanding of the abrasive wear behavior of pack cyanided mild steel and highlight its potential as a cost-effective surface treatment technique for improving wear resistance in various industrial applications. The knowledge gained from this research can aid engineers and material scientists in selecting appropriate surface modification techniques to enhance the lifespan and performance of mild steel components subjected to abrasive wear conditions.
