CORROSION BEHAVIOUR OF LOW CARBON STEEL USED IN OIL AND GAS ABOVEGROUND STORAGE TANKS

Abstract:
Corrosion is a significant concern in the oil and gas industry, particularly in aboveground storage tanks (ASTs) where the stored hydrocarbons and the tank environment create conditions that promote corrosion. This study aims to investigate the corrosion behavior of low carbon steel, a commonly used material in AST construction, in oil and gas storage environments.

The research methodology involved the exposure of low carbon steel specimens to simulated oil and gas storage conditions, including the presence of corrosive agents such as moisture, hydrogen sulfide (H2S), and carbon dioxide (CO2). Various corrosion assessment techniques, including visual inspection, weight loss measurements, and electrochemical analysis, were employed to evaluate the corrosion rates, mechanisms, and the effectiveness of corrosion mitigation measures.

The results revealed that low carbon steel exhibited varying degrees of corrosion under different storage conditions. The presence of moisture, H2S, and CO2 accelerated the corrosion process, leading to the formation of corrosion products such as iron oxides and sulfides. The corrosion rates were influenced by factors such as temperature, exposure time, and the concentration of corrosive agents.

Furthermore, the study investigated the effectiveness of corrosion mitigation strategies, such as the use of protective coatings, cathodic protection systems, and corrosion inhibitors. These measures were found to significantly reduce corrosion rates and extend the service life of low carbon steel ASTs.

Based on the findings, recommendations were made for the selection of appropriate corrosion control measures and material selection for AST construction. These recommendations aim to minimize the risk of corrosion-related failures, ensure the integrity of ASTs, and enhance the safety and reliability of oil and gas storage operations.

Overall, this research provides valuable insights into the corrosion behavior of low carbon steel in oil and gas ASTs and offers practical guidance for corrosion prevention and control strategies in the industry. The findings contribute to the development of effective corrosion management practices, ultimately leading to improved asset integrity and operational efficiency in the oil and gas sector.
