EXERGY ANALYSIS OF HYBRID SOLAR PV- DIESEL / BIOFUEL SYSTEM FOR COGENERATION (ELECTRCITY AND COLD)

Abstract:
This abstract presents an exergy analysis of a hybrid solar photovoltaic (PV)-diesel/biofuel system designed for cogeneration of electricity and cold. The integration of renewable energy sources with conventional energy systems is gaining significant attention due to the growing need for sustainable and efficient energy solutions. This study focuses on the evaluation of the system’s performance from an exergy perspective, which allows for a comprehensive assessment of the system’s energy flow, efficiency, and resource utilization.

The hybrid system consists of solar PV panels, diesel generators, biofuel generators, and a combined cooling and power (CCP) unit. The solar PV panels harness solar energy to generate electricity, while the diesel and biofuel generators provide backup power during low solar radiation periods. Additionally, waste heat recovery from the generators is utilized for cold production through the CCP unit, enhancing the overall system efficiency and reducing environmental impact.

The exergy analysis methodology is applied to quantify the exergy flows and efficiencies of each component and the overall system. The exergy destruction and exergy efficiency of the system are also evaluated, providing insights into the locations and sources of irreversibilities within the system. This analysis helps identify areas for improvement and optimization, leading to enhanced system performance and resource utilization.

The results of the exergy analysis reveal the contributions of each component to the overall system’s exergy destruction and efficiency. The solar PV panels exhibit high exergy efficiency, harnessing the abundant solar energy resource effectively. The diesel and biofuel generators show relatively lower exergy efficiencies due to their inherent combustion irreversibilities. The CCP unit demonstrates the potential for additional exergy recovery through waste heat utilization for cooling purposes.

Based on the findings, recommendations can be made for system optimization, such as improving the efficiency of the diesel/biofuel generators or integrating advanced thermal storage systems to enhance the utilization of intermittent solar energy. Furthermore, the exergy analysis provides a comprehensive framework for assessing the environmental impact of the hybrid system, facilitating informed decision-making regarding energy system planning and policy formulation.

In conclusion, the exergy analysis of the hybrid solar PV-diesel/biofuel system for cogeneration demonstrates its potential in achieving efficient energy conversion and resource utilization. This study contributes to the understanding of the system’s performance and provides valuable insights for system optimization, leading to sustainable and environmentally friendly energy solutions for cogeneration applications.
