THE EFFECT OF GRANDPARENTS RAISING GRANDCHILDREN IN NIGERIAN FAMILIES: A CASE STUDY OF UYO

Abstract:
The phenomenon of grandparents raising grandchildren has become increasingly prevalent in Nigerian families, with significant implications for both the older generation and the younger generation involved. This case study focuses on Uyo, a city in Nigeria, to explore the effect of grandparents assuming the role of primary caregivers for their grandchildren. By examining the social, economic, and psychological aspects of this arrangement, this study aims to provide insights into the challenges and benefits experienced by both the grandparents and grandchildren in Uyo.

The study utilizes a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative interviews with grandparents and quantitative surveys to gather a comprehensive understanding of the phenomenon. Through purposive sampling, a diverse group of grandparents from different socioeconomic backgrounds will be selected to participate in the study. The interviews will explore their motivations, experiences, and challenges encountered in assuming the caregiving role. Additionally, a survey will be administered to assess the psychological well-being and social support networks of the grandchildren being raised by their grandparents.

The findings of this study will contribute to the existing literature on intergenerational caregiving in Nigeria, specifically focusing on the Uyo context. The research aims to shed light on the factors driving grandparents to assume primary caregiving responsibilities and the impact of this arrangement on their physical and mental well-being. Furthermore, the study will explore the effects on the grandchildren’s development, academic performance, and socialization.

The results of this study will have several implications for policymakers, social workers, and healthcare professionals in Uyo and beyond. Understanding the challenges faced by grandparents raising grandchildren can inform the development of support programs and policies that address their specific needs. Additionally, recognizing the impact on the grandchildren’s well-being can guide interventions aimed at ensuring their healthy development and successful transition into adulthood.

In conclusion, this case study on the effect of grandparents raising grandchildren in Nigerian families, specifically in Uyo, will provide valuable insights into the complexities and dynamics of intergenerational caregiving. By examining the challenges and benefits experienced by both the grandparents and grandchildren, this research aims to contribute to the development of targeted support systems that promote the well-being of all individuals involved in this unique family arrangement.
