A QUALITATIVE EXPLORATION OF THE LIFE SITUATION OF STREET CHILDREN IN UYO TOWN
Abstract:
This qualitative study aims to explore the life situation of street children in Uyo Town, a bustling urban center in Nigeria. Street children represent a vulnerable group that faces numerous challenges, including poverty, abuse, and limited access to education and healthcare. By conducting in-depth interviews and observations, this study seeks to gain a comprehensive understanding of the daily experiences, needs, and aspirations of these children.
The research will employ a purposive sampling technique to select a diverse group of street children aged between 7 and 17 years. Semi-structured interviews and participant observations will be used as primary data collection methods, allowing for a rich exploration of the participants’ lived experiences. The data will be analyzed using thematic analysis to identify key themes and patterns in the narratives.
The study aims to shed light on the factors that contribute to children ending up on the streets, such as family dynamics, economic circumstances, and social issues. It will also explore the coping mechanisms and strategies adopted by street children to survive in their challenging environment. Additionally, the study will investigate the support systems available to street children, including outreach programs, NGOs, and government interventions, to assess their effectiveness and identify potential gaps.
The findings of this research will provide valuable insights into the specific needs of street children in Uyo Town and inform the development of targeted interventions and policies to improve their well-being. It is hoped that the study’s outcomes will contribute to raising awareness about the plight of street children and promote advocacy for their rights and access to essential services.
