ASSESSMENT ON THE HOME BASED CARE AND SUPPORT PROGRAMME FOR INFECTED AND AFFECTED PEOPLE WITH HIV/AIDS IN NIGERIA
Abstract:
The Home-Based Care and Support Programme (HBCSP) plays a vital role in addressing the needs of individuals infected and affected by HIV/AIDS in Nigeria. This study aims to assess the effectiveness and impact of the HBCSP in improving the quality of life and health outcomes of people living with HIV/AIDS in Nigeria.
The assessment utilizes a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data analysis and qualitative interviews with program beneficiaries, healthcare providers, and key stakeholders. Quantitative data is collected through a structured survey, capturing information on demographic characteristics, access to care, medication adherence, and overall well-being. Qualitative interviews provide in-depth insights into the experiences, challenges, and perceived benefits of the HBCSP.
Preliminary findings reveal that the HBCSP has positively impacted the lives of infected and affected individuals with HIV/AIDS in Nigeria. The program has increased access to comprehensive care and support services, including antiretroviral therapy (ART), counseling, and psychosocial support. Improved medication adherence, reduced stigma, enhanced social support networks, and increased empowerment are some of the key reported outcomes.
However, challenges remain in the implementation of the HBCSP. Limited resources, including funding constraints and shortages of trained healthcare personnel, present barriers to the program’s scalability and sustainability. Additionally, geographical disparities and cultural norms sometimes impede the delivery and uptake of services, particularly in remote and marginalized communities.
Recommendations for strengthening the HBCSP include increasing investment in healthcare infrastructure, expanding training opportunities for healthcare providers, and developing targeted interventions to address the unique needs of different populations. Enhancing collaboration between government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and community-based organizations is crucial for a comprehensive and sustainable response.
This assessment contributes to the existing body of knowledge on home-based care and support programs for people with HIV/AIDS in Nigeria. The findings can inform policy and programmatic decisions, leading to improved service delivery, increased access to care, and better health outcomes for individuals affected by HIV/AIDS in Nigeria and other similar contexts.
