PERCEPTION AND EXPERIENCE OF CHILDREN IN CONFLICT WITH THE LAW: IN THE CASE OF ADDIS ABABA REMAND HOME
Abstract:
This study explores the perception and experiences of children in conflict with the law who are held at the Addis Ababa Remand Home in Ethiopia. The objective is to gain a comprehensive understanding of the conditions, challenges, and factors influencing the lives of these children within the remand home setting. By examining their perspectives and lived experiences, this research aims to provide insights that can inform policy and intervention strategies to better support and rehabilitate these children.
The study employs a qualitative research design, utilizing interviews, focus group discussions, and observations to gather data. A sample of children aged 12 to 18 years, who are currently residing at the Addis Ababa Remand Home, will be selected through purposive sampling. Additionally, key informants, including caregivers, staff members, and legal professionals, will be included to provide supplementary perspectives.
The findings of this study will be analyzed thematically, identifying common themes and patterns within the narratives of the participants. The analysis will explore the children’s perceptions of their experiences within the remand home, their understanding of the legal processes, their relationships with peers and staff, as well as their access to education, healthcare, and recreational activities. Furthermore, the study will examine the impact of the remand home environment on the children’s emotional well-being and their prospects for reintegration into society.
This research aims to contribute to the body of knowledge on the experiences of children in conflict with the law, particularly within the context of remand homes. The study’s findings will shed light on the specific needs and challenges faced by these children, providing valuable insights for the development of targeted interventions, policies, and support systems. Ultimately, the goal is to promote the rights and well-being of children in conflict with the law and foster their successful reintegration into society.
