INVESTIGATING THE PHYSIOLOGICAL DEMANDS OF BADMINTON DOUBLES MATCHES.

Abstract:
Badminton is a popular and dynamic sport that requires a combination of technical skills, tactical acumen, and physical fitness. While previous research has examined the physiological demands of badminton singles matches, there is a scarcity of studies specifically investigating the physiological demands of badminton doubles matches. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the physiological demands experienced by players during badminton doubles matches.

The study employed a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative physiological measurements with qualitative observations. A total of 24 experienced male and female badminton players participated in the study. The participants were divided into 12 doubles pairs and played a series of competitive matches under standardized conditions. Data collection included heart rate monitoring, blood lactate analysis, and video analysis to assess movement patterns and game intensity.

The results revealed that badminton doubles matches impose significant physiological demands on players. During matches, players exhibited elevated heart rates, indicative of the high-intensity nature of the sport. The mean heart rate during play was found to be around 80-85% of the participants’ maximum heart rate. Blood lactate analysis demonstrated a significant increase in lactate levels post-match, indicating the anaerobic energy demands and metabolic stress induced by badminton doubles.

Furthermore, video analysis revealed that badminton doubles matches are characterized by frequent explosive movements, including short sprints, jumps, lunges, and rapid changes in direction. Players exhibited a combination of aerobic and anaerobic efforts, as they engaged in prolonged rallies interspersed with quick bursts of intense activity.

The findings of this study provide valuable insights into the physiological demands of badminton doubles matches, highlighting the importance of aerobic and anaerobic fitness, agility, and muscular endurance for successful performance. Coaches and players can utilize this information to tailor training programs and optimize physical conditioning specific to the demands of doubles play.

Future research should explore additional factors such as player strategies, tactics, and the influence of match duration on physiological responses. Moreover, examining the differences in physiological demands between genders and skill levels would contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of badminton doubles matches.
