THE INFLUENCE OF MEDIA REPRESENTATIONS ON BODY IMAGE AND SELF-ESTEEM IN SPORTS.

Abstract:

The media plays a powerful role in shaping societal perceptions and ideals, particularly concerning body image and self-esteem. This abstract aims to explore the influence of media representations on body image and self-esteem within the context of sports. The study examines how media portrayals of athletes’ bodies impact individuals’ body image perception and self-esteem, focusing on both male and female athletes.

Research suggests that media representations of athletes often emphasize specific body types, such as lean and muscular physiques, which may contribute to the development of unrealistic beauty standards within the sports industry. Consequently, individuals, especially athletes and sports enthusiasts, may experience body dissatisfaction and negative self-perception when their own bodies do not align with these idealized images.

Furthermore, the study investigates the potential consequences of media-induced body image dissatisfaction and its impact on self-esteem among athletes. It explores how distorted body image perceptions can influence athletes’ self-esteem, athletic performance, and overall well-being. Additionally, the study analyzes differences in media influence between genders, examining whether males and females are affected differently by media representations of athletic bodies.

To achieve comprehensive findings, the research design incorporates both qualitative and quantitative methods. Qualitative data collection methods, such as interviews and focus groups, provide in-depth insights into individuals’ lived experiences and perceptions of media representations. Quantitative surveys and measurements are utilized to assess the relationship between media exposure, body image dissatisfaction, and self-esteem in a broader sample.

The anticipated results of this study will contribute to the understanding of how media representations in sports impact body image and self-esteem. The findings can inform the development of targeted interventions and media literacy programs aimed at promoting healthier body image perceptions and enhancing self-esteem among athletes and sports enthusiasts. By challenging unrealistic beauty standards perpetuated by the media, it is hoped that individuals will develop more positive body image perceptions and experience improved self-esteem within the context of sports.
